What is Craniosacral Therapy?

ree

Craniosacral Therapy (also known as cranialsacral therapy) is a gentle, noninvasive form of bodywork that addresses the bones of the head, spinal column and sacrum. The goal is to release compression in those areas which alleviates stress and pain.

Craniosacral therapy (CST) was founded by an osteopath, John Upledger, and it is performed by physical therapists & massage therapists. It’s a “subtle” therapy that involves light holding of the skull and sacrum and almost imperceptible manipulations.

How does it work?

Craniosacral Therapy can be used to treat a vast array of pain and discomfort. It works by normalizing the environment around the brain and spinal cord, which enhances the body’s natural ability to heal and self-correct. Therefore, this technique can be used to treat both acute and chronic pain alike. Whether you are recovering from a sports injury, surgical procedure, chronic arthritis, stroke, or neurological impairment, CST may be a benefit to you.

Using a very soft touch, practitioners release restrictions in the soft tissues that surround the central nervous system. CranioSacral Therapy is increasingly used as a preventive health measure for its ability to bolster resistance to disease and it’s effectiveness for a wide range of medical issues associated with various pain and dysfunction. The goal is to release compression in those areas which alleviates stress and pain.

Spine & Body Wellness offers Craniosacral Therapy

Spine & Body Wellness offers Craniosacral Therapy for patients that our physical therapists identify as being able to benefit from the treatment. Over time, tissues to tighten and distort the Craniosacral system — these issues can cause restrictions in the brain or spinal cord.

Our Craniosacral specialists can detect and prevent such restrictions through a cranio-sacral evaluation. We will gently touch various locations of your body to test for the ease of motion and rhythm of the spinal fluid pulsing around your brain and spinal cord. This will determine whether or not cranio-sacral therapy will benefit you.

How does it feel?

In a 1 to 2 hour session, the patient lies quietly, while the therapist performs light touches at selected points around the head, body, legs & feet. This non-invasive, full crack light touch of gentle pressure is performed with no joint manipulation or high impact techniques such as those used in chiropractic work or osteopathy.

“The benefits of CranioSacral are often difficult to explain, I have seen time and time again chronic pain begun to dissipate, concussion symptoms resolve, and children with specific behavior problems (such as those diagnosed with Autism), be able to calm themselves in difficult to handle situations.” - Masha Katz, Co-Owner at Spine & Body Wellness
